LADY EAGLES STUN OPPONENTS ON THE ROAD

The Concordia Screamin’ Eagles girls basketball team continued its amazing run of continuously improving basketball this past weekend when they invaded the dens of both the Cougars of St. John Lutheran and the Bobcats of Racine Christian. The Eagles nearly caught the Cougars hibernating (if Cougars do that sort of thing) when they Lady Eagles participated in their second straight thriller before coming up on the short end of a 34 – 26 score. Rachel Hasko had a season high 19 points, including another three pointer, Brynn Hetland matched her season high with six points and Ashley Quella hit a free throw to combine for the Eagles 26 points. Coach Hasko noted, "You just don’t come into the Cougars’ den and play like we did tonight. What our girls did on the court tonight was simply amazing." Coach Hetland attributed the girls continued success to the recently implemented 1 – 2 – 2 zone defense and praised the girls for their rebounding and aggressive pursuit of loose balls. The Eagle coaching staff also used a 1 – 2 – 2 full court press extensively for the first time this season with a good deal of success.

Continuing to feel bold and aggressive, the Eagles furthered their pursuit of victory when they chose to invade the den of another opponent when they flew into the den of the Bobcats of Racine Christian less than 24 hours later. Despite a scoreless first quarter by both teams, the Eagles came out in the second quarter and applied the same 1 – 2 – 2 full court pressure that had given them success the previous night, with even better results. The Eagles scored eight second quarter points and flew to a halftime lead. Continuing to soar high, like Eagles tend to do, the girls cruised to an easy 26 – 8 victory to end another excellent weekend of Eagle girls’ basketball. Said Coach Hasko, "This is what I told the girls I knew we could do. This is what we have been working hard for all season. Nobody gave us a chance this year and the past three games we have proved them all wrong. The Concordia Eagles are for real!" Rachel Hasko continued her assault on opposing defenses, scoring 16 points, Ashley Quella had another solid game with eight points and Sophia Drager added two more points. The girls look forward to building on their recent momentum when they play three nonconference games during Christmas break at the Bronco Showcase in Union Grove. Rachel Hasko releases a shot as teammates Ashley Quella, Brynn Hetland and Sophia Drager prepare to rebound. Coaches Hasko and Hetland, as well as boys’ Coach Wagner, have encouraged Hasko to become more aggressive and proactive on offense this year. Hasko has responded with 49 points in the past three games.
